“Freedom House allowed me to be and find different parts of myself that I didn’t even know I had in me”

Q: Where are you from?A: Boston, MA

Q: What school do you attend?
A: Milton High School

Q: Share a memory you have while at Freedom House?

A: In my first year at Freedom House my group had a debate and it was boys vs girls. It was interesting how we each depicted the same topic when arguing on separate sides. It was also really funny since the boys lost and they got mad. I also love when we go on field trips during the summer like when we went to the art museum.

Q: What is your favorite part about Freedom House?
A:  When I came to Freedom House it was like turning over a new leaf. I learned many life lessons I never thought I needed. I had many deep discussions that made me see through a different light. Freedom House allowed me to be and find different parts of myself that I didn’t even know I had in me. Freedom House is really like a family. I love how not only can we be cordial with each other but during our downtime, we can share many laughs and jokes with one another. 

Q: How has Freedom House impacted you?
A: I appreciate how well the staff inspired me to do more with my art. I was nervous to put it in a showcase presentation but the only way I’m going to get it out there is if I allow people to see it.

Q: What are you thankful for? 

A: I am thankful for Freedom House giving me courage. This is just one step forward to where I’m going to be in the future.

Q: Share a memory you have while at Freedom House.A: It was a hot summer but I enjoyed connecting with people who were part of the program.

A: My favorite part was playing games during the summertime and Jenga and having discussions in groups.

A: Freedom House has taught me team building and social skills. I’m connected because I overall liked and enjoyed the program.

“I’m thankful for the friendships and the conversations that helped me decide where I want to be in the future. The conversations that I had with psychologists at Freedom House motivated me to be one as well”

A: Northeastern University

Q: Share a memory you have while at Freedom House.A: My favorite memory from Freedom House is when I met people with different occupations and was able to ask and learn about their experiences. 

Q: What is your favorite part about Freedom House?
A: The dedication of the staff to helping students throughout high school and after.

Q: What are you thankful for?A: I’m thankful for the friendships I made at Freedom House and most thankful for the conversations that helped me decide where I want to be in the future. The conversations that I had with psychologists at Freedom house motivated me to be one as well.

Q: How has Freedom House impacted you?
A: Freedom House impacted me by helping me realize my strengths and areas of growth. I began to have a deeper understanding of what I wanted my next steps in college to look like and it also helped build better connections with my peers and myself.

“My favorite part about Freedom House is how they keep connections with the scholars”

Q: Where are you from?A: Dorchester, MA

Q: What school do you attend?
A: Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology

Q: Share a memory you have while at Freedom House.A: Going to Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) and Pine Manor College and other different places to help us identify career paths after college. Going to these places really paves the way for opportunities to sprout.

Q: What is your favorite part about Freedom House?
A: How they keep connection with the scholars. The summer program is not like the average summer job employment where they would just have you there for the job. It’s a learning experience and they won’t leave you hanging even when you’re finished working.
Q: What are you thankful for?A: I’m thankful for family and God because a lot of people don’t choose what they’re born into and I could’ve been born into something much worse and there are people that have less than me so I am also thankful for what I have because it could all be gone.

A: Freedom House has been very helpful to me by helping me build connections and network with people that want to help others.

Q: Share a memory you have while at Freedom House.A: Playing basketball at Freedom House and having staff play against scholars.

A: I like the location where Freedom House is in Grove Hall. I also like the backyard, where we were able to play basketball during the summer.
Q: What are you thankful for?A: I’m happy that I can live every day and have the strength to keep moving forward both physically and mentally.

A: Freedom House has taught me the discipline and principles to be a compassionate and thoughtful person in society. I plan to work at Freedom House long term and I’m still learning form them so I can find a good career in my life.

Q: Share a memory you have while at Freedom House.A: During this past summertime when we went on different field trips in Boston.

A: My coach and the staff. They are always there for me and they care for me.
Q: What are you thankful for?A: I’m thankful I can wake up in the morning and I can breathe. I’m thankful for my mom, grandmother, dad, and everyone in my life they are always there for me. I’m thankful I can talk to my mom anytime since her room is right next to mine.

A: Freedom House helped me with my speaking skills, as well as helping me to be myself and not be like anyone else. They give different types of opportunities for jobs and school and in life.

Q: Where are you from?A: Republic of Guinea and Senegal

Q: What school do you attend?
A: University of Massachusetts – Boston; I graduated from Boston International this year.

Q: Share a memory you have while at Freedom House.A: I recall back in 2020 when we were on Zoom every day and it was so tricky, and I always used the chats. I used to worry that my English would indeed make people laugh at me. However, all the staff members encouraged me to speak openly and ask for assistance. Knowing that each person at Freedom House had their accent and were from different parts of the world, made me joyful and less nervous.

Q: What is your favorite part about Freedom House?
A: The Road to Success round tables and the field trips are my two favorite aspects of Freedom House.
Q: What are you thankful for?A: Despite the difficulties, I am grateful for just being able to get out of bed each day. I appreciate everything the employees at Freedom House did to help me both financially and emotionally. I’m grateful for all the lovely folks who have always looked out for me and wanted the best for me.

Q: How has Freedom House impacted you?
A: I am getting back in touch with Freedom House since they were the first to hire me after everyone else turned me down because I lacked the required skills for their organization/ company. But Freedom House is more than just a place to work; it’s a family that treats me well, values my intelligence, and supports my pursuit of knowledge. They showed me how to be myself and prioritize my needs over everyone else’s.

Q: What is your favorite part about working at Freedom House?
A: My favorite part is being able to work with students on their creative craft/art.

Q: Why are you still connected to Freedom House?
A: The reason I’m still connected to Freedom House is to inspire and motivate students to become better and reach their best potential.

Q: Share a memory you have while at Freedom House.A: I think one of my best memories was getting to play my saxophone and perform alongside André Ward during our Champions of Freedom event.Q: What are you thankful for?A: I am thankful for still finding out my purpose and being a support to the youth that I work with.

A: Freedom House has impacted me to always be better than before and to keep pushing even though things may not look as well.

A: I believe people should give back to freedom house because we are the ones that are impacting and changing the lives of students.
